Be Happy, Serve Somebody

“I don’t know what your destiny will be, but one thing I know . . . the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who have sought and found how to serve.” Albert Schweitzer
While preparing my list of Christmas gifts this year, the theme of happiness kept coming up. Luther Burbank said, “The greatest happiness in the world is to make others happy.” Doesn’t it just make you feel good all over when you can make others happy? Abe Lincoln is known for saying, “Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.” We don’t often realize that we can shift our attitude just like that. One of my friends was recently hooked up to a heart monitor. She was was told during one of the exercises to feel gratitude. Her heart noticeably calmed down. Gratitude is one of the easiest feelings to conjure to reduce stress. Take a minute to feel gratitude — for children, grandchildren, pets, whatever brings up the feeling of gratitude.
Harry Palmer, author of the Avatar® materials states that, “Each moment you are happy is a gift to the rest of the world.” The Jewish Holy Book, The Talmud says, “We will be called to account on Judgment Day for every permissible thing we might have enjoyed but did not.” It seems funny that we have to be challenged to enjoy life.
A great magazine, Building a Just and Sustainable World often prints articles on happiness. In the Winter 2009 issue, “Ten Things Science Says Will Make You Happy” listed the following:
1) Savor Everyday Moments
2) Avoid Comparisons
3) Put Money Low on the List
4) Have Meaningful Goals
5) Take Initiative at Work
6) Make Friends, Treasure Family
7) Smile Even When You Don’t Feel Like It
8) Say Thank You Like You Mean It
9) Get Out and Exercise
10) Give It Away, Give It Away Now
Compile your list of what makes you happy. Share the list with others (include me). Ask your customers, family and friends what makes them happy? Often asking the question causes a shift. Explore new ways to serve; add them to your list. Have a wonderful Christmas!
